General Bilimoria's Canteen - Maidenhead SL6

A dosa is a thin, crisp crepe made from a fermented lentil and rice batter, served with sambar and coconut chutney. It is south Indian, not north Indian, and almost no takeaway in the Thames Valley makes one. We serve a plain dosa, a masala dosa filled with spiced potato, a masala uthapam — thicker, more like a pancake, topped with tomato and onion — and sambhar vada, a savoury lentil doughnut.

Several dishes on our specialities list are cooked without any dairy and are marked as such: Chicken Palak Wala with creamed spinach substituted, North Indian Garlic Chilli Chicken, and Murg Zaffrani Korma with saffron. If you avoid dairy, you do not have to ask us to guess.

Soya chaap is a wheat-and-soya protein with a texture close to meat, marinated in tandoori spices and grilled. It is a Delhi street-food staple and rarely appears on UK menus. The grill also does tandoori broccoli in a yoghurt marinade, king prawns in tandoori spice, and a mixed platter of seekh kebab, lamb chops, chicken tikka and lasooni tikka.

The vegetarian section runs to eleven mains cooked in their own right, not scaled-down sides. With the four dosas and the soya chaap alongside them, it is one of the larger meat-free selections in the area.

We cook in our own Maidenhead kitchen and deliver across SL6, Tuesday to Sunday from 5pm until 9:45pm. We are closed on Mondays. Halal options are available — ask when you order.
